A spinel is an aluminum oxide mineral that ranges in color from yellow to red. There are also blue, green and pink varieties. This gemstone can be found in different colors and shades. Most spinels have a brilliant luster similar to that of rubies and sapphires. Red spinels are among the most rare and beautiful gemstones available today. The red color of spinel is caused by traces of manganese, so it is often called “mangano-spinel,” although some other gems such as garnets and rubies can also be found in this beautiful color.
